Hand Painted
I am trying to identify a hand painted china plate?
I purchased an older plate that appears to be hand painted. The only identifying marks are the words "North" painted on the back and three straight lines which are each about 1/2 " long that are actually grooves in the china. Can anyone identify it for me & is it worth anything?
The "North" is hand painted in the same color as the flowers on the front and the three marks are to the lower left of that. The design on the front is of reddish flowers & buds with green & gray leaves-the back ground is mottled blue gray fading to yellows, tans & deep pinks.
I hate to be picky, but I need more than that. Is the Word "north" machine printed or hand painted? What is the front design of? And what colour is the clay, like bright white, cream or terracotta? Also where are your grooves situated? If they are place around the base in a circle, out towards the foot rim, they may just be situating marks for a kiln stilt, the thing that holds a plate up off a shelf when it is being fired so the glaze doesn't weld itself to the kiln furniture.
If, however, your lines are in some sort of liner pattern, they could be a logo or maker's mark, and if your "north" is Handwritten, you could have an interesting piece. I would suggest an antique dealer would be happy to talk to you, or there are "what ceramic is that?" books out there, but it is hard to be more useful without a longer description, or even better, a photo.
