Have you ever read fairy tales but the original not the sugarcoated crap?
I noticed most people don't know the original fairy tales, whom were gruesome, dark, and not intended for children. Like one time I was watching a little mermaid music video, and saw comment saying Oh I wish my life would end in a fairy tale ending just Ariel. One the original one she doesn't get the prince and she kills herself. I don't think anybody would like that ending.
The originals are the only versions I read. I don't go for the censored versions in the children's book section. I read the ones from the mythology section. In the film industry, I think this is mainly Disney's doing in order to make a fun and safe family film empire (they don't want kids to know that Bambie really died. Opz!). For books, it's just for children's entertainment, since parents want to shelter their kids more than to scare them into being good (which is what most folkloric tales were for).
I have read a couple of books of original folklore and fairytales, and I have one book in particular called "Best-Loved Folktales of the World" by Joanna Cole. You'll be surprised to read how differently tales that we have fallen in love with - The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Fox and the Hound, the Ballad of Mulan, the REAL Cinderella story, to name a few - are from the mainstream adaptations.
Just for the hell of it, I'll just say that everything by Disney is censored, even non-folkloric stories, like The Hunchback of Notre Dame (which is a Gothic novel), Tarzan, and the biography of Pocahontas.
To me, the term "fairytale" is just a censored version of the orignal folkloric tale.
